Lae power supply is expected to be boosted by 3MW when a PNG Power team completes the Gabensis to Wampit 22 kV line project by the end of this month.

Work on the Gabensis to Wampit 22 kV line commenced in late March 2011 and is expected to be completed in May, if weather and land issue do not hinder the progress.

Project Team Leader Mr Obed Batia said the major objective of PPL investing in the construction of this line was to interconnect Lae and Baiune electricity supply grid and import 3MW surplus power from Baiune mini hydro generation into Lae to improve the city’s power supply and sustain its increasing load.

Mr Batia said the project when completed would also serve parts of Mumeng, Wampar and the Huon districts of Morobe Province.

He said so far the team had completed 4 km and would cover the remaining 8 km by mid-May.

The 12 km line route is expected to accommodate 81 power poles and 43,200 meters of conductors.
