I, John Tangit, Chief Executive Officer of PNG Power Limited take this opportunity to apologise to and inform our valued clients (individuals, business & industry and government) on the misrepresentation of information in the press regarding the increase in electricity tariffs recently. Most notable is one that appeared in Friday 10th January 2014.

As of the 11th of January 2014, the Minister for Public Enterprises Hon. Ben Micah directed PNG Power Limited not to increase electricity tariffs approved by ICCC during the first quarter of 2014 as it has been our Government’s commitment not to increase electricity tariffs and to pass these savings to the hands of Papua New Guinean families.

The Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neil and Public Enterprises & State Investment Minister Hon Ben Micah promised Government support of ten million kina (K10 Million) in support for the much needed maintenance and upgrading of the aging and derelict PNG Power Limited’s generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. This is more than the expected revenue to be raised from the ICCC approved tariff increase.

PNG Power has inherited a lot of legacy challenges that we the new board and executive team are now developing strategic plans to address past and current major issues and the way forward toward a reliable and accessible supply of power to all our people, businesses and industries in future to stimulate economic growth for Papua New Guinea and this positive support from the Government will only enhance PNG Power’s efforts.

I repeat here that PNG Power Limited will not raise any tariffs.

Wishing all PNG Powers Customers a Happy and Prosperous 2014
