PNG Power is now extending electricity supply from Popondetta town to Girua airport covering the villages along the highway that needed electricity services for many years.
Under its rural electrification program, PNG Power has already erected 10 distribution poles from the town to Hegata junction for a total of 1.3 kilometers.
PPL linesmen will continue erecting more power poles this month for an additional 3.7 kilometers covering Jonita, Damahu and Ijika.
Once lines are stringed and energized, the first 5 km of power supply will benefit centers including Jegarata Elementary School, Juvenile Detention & Rehabilitation Center, Anglican Teachers College, Newton Theological College and Ijika Primary School.
This rural electrification project began in January 2013 and PNG Power will extend power supply for a total of 20 kilometers from Popondetta town to Girua airport and extend 3km further.
The first 5km is the first phase of this rural electrification project funded by the national government for a total of K850, 000.00.
The second phase of 15 km from Ijika to Gurney will begin as soon as the first phase is complete and funding is made available. Funds from the District Service Improvement Fund from the local MPs are forthcoming.
