PNG Power Ltd would like to clarify that the power outage in Lae, Madang and the Highlands Region was a planned outage undertaken to reconnect a generation set at the Ramu Hydro Power Station (HPS) that was undergoing rehabilitation work with our contractor, Andritz Hydro of Austria. The rehabilitation work is an ongoing project for the Ramu HPS to increase the current capacity from 45MW – 60MW.
PNG Power Ltd is currently facing generation capacity issues with its thermal power station on Buka Island which is affecting power supply to its customers. Two generator sets at the Kubu Power Station went offline on the weekend due to mechanical faults experienced. One of the generators is a leased machine which was brought in to assist the power capacity issue in Buka.
PNG Power has added a power boost of K50,000 to the Institute of Engineers PNG (IEPNG) to host its National Conference in April. This financial support gives the state-owned electricity company the platinum sponsorship right. PPL acting GM for Operations and Maintenance, Luke Malemba said the company have over 200 engineers and it feels right to support the conference.

PNG Power Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Central Provincial Government and a South Korean company, K&P Limited on February 8, 2017 to assist with the feasibility study into the development of a 50 MW solar farm. The 50MW solar farm is an initiative of the Central Provincial Government and will be constructed at 14 Mile outside Port Moresby.
PNG Power is liaising with the Chief Secretary’s Office to come up with a repayment plan for all Government Departments. The disconnection of the National Parliament, the Government House and several Government Departments is part of PNG Power’s drive to recoup the huge amount of money that Government Department and entities owe in outstanding bills.
Part of the suburb of Gerehu Stage Four (4) here in Port Moresby, was on forced outage from Thursday 9th February to Monday 13th February. The original outage was caused by a fault on the equipment but then an extended outage was caused by the harassment of PPL officers, by some men (customers) who were drinking at that time.
