Buka Power Supply Situation
PNG Power Ltd is currently facing generation capacity issues with its thermal power station on Buka Island which is affecting power supply to its customers.
Two generator sets at the Kubu Power Station went offline on the weekend due to mechanical faults experienced. One of the generators is a leased machine which was brought in to assist the power capacity issue in Buka.
As of yesterday afternoon, the leased unit was restored and has reduced the load shedding requirements within Buka, Sohano Island and Kokopau.
Others spare parts for the generator sets are been flown over from Port Moresby today. A restoration team from Port Moresby is also expected in Buka. It is anticipated that that Buka’s power supply will be restored by Monday.
Power supply will be maintained for essential services especially the Buka General Hospital while PPL will continue load shedding to all areas.
The PPL Management understands that there is a greater need for an improved power supply for Buka and has already earmarked two new machines for Bougainville. One for Buka and another for Arawa.
PPL sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused during this time and asks for your cooperation and understanding of the situation.
