Imrpovements on the Gazelle Power Grid

PNG Power Ltd (PPL) for the last month has carried out improvement works on its power supply in East New Britain Province.

The works included the installation and commissioning of the Toboi Diesel Power Station, maintenance and repairs to the Warangoi Dam intake and reliability improvements at the Warangoi Power Station.

The maintenance and repair work at the dam intake and power station is aimed at improving the generation capacity and reliability of the power station for the electricity consumers.

An assessment team visited the Warangoi dam intake a week ago to see damage done over time where the concrete basement cracked up and the intake filtration system replaced.

New primary circular filtration screens were also put in place to catch any rubbish that came with the river flow into the intake. This will ensure consistent water flow which will flow through to the hydro power station. Work on the concrete patching will begin this month (July) once a contractor is secured to carry out the work.

New circuit breakers were also installed at the power station area which will now improve the reliability of electricity generated from Warangoi. PPL sees the maintenance work important for its East New Britain Province customers.

For the new Toboi Power Station, PPL has purchased two 1437 kVA CAT Generators which are stationed at the CPL Toboi premises. A mini switch yard was also constructed to cater for the two machine transformers and a 22kV bus bar.

The Toboi power station had started supplying into the Gazelle grid on June 5 2016 and has taken on load when Warangoi was on planned shutdown.

This has greatly assisted with current generation demands in the province.
