Power restored to Kranget Island in Madang
Power supply to Kranget Island, just off Madang town was restored on Friday, February 10, 2017 by PNG Power Ltd.
Kranget Island was without power for 20 months due to damage caused by sea currents on the submarine cable carrying electricity supply from Madang town.
In March 2015, electricity supply was cut off and it was discovered that the submarine cable was damaged due to excessive forces caused by strong sea currents over the years.
PNG Power could not sort the issue out quickly due to limited suppliers of required underwater cables to repair the damage. Repair works undertaken in the last weeks had seen PPL employees put in place a strong cable and foundations that will hold the cables against the strong sea currents.
PPL is pleased to have restored power supply on Kranget Island. At the same time we are appealing to the people of Kranget Island to stop illegal connections on the island.
In the next couple of weeks, inspectors and technicians will be carrying out household inspections on the island to ensure safety of all connections and to disconnect illegal connections.
