TOTAL POWER OUTAGE IN NCD

An act of vandalism was the cause of the total power system failure on the Port Moresby system which affected consumers in NCD and the surrounding areas.

PNG Power Linesmen patrolled the Transmission line to the Exxon Mobil LNG Power Plant and discovered that bottles were tied to a piece of wire and thrown over the line at Koukou outside Port Moresby.

This caused a short circuit on the system at 4.41am causing the Exxon Mobil Power Station to be cut off putting a huge burden on other power stations resulting in them shutting down.

Electricity supply could not be fully restored quickly as the outage caused technical issues on some of the generating units causing shortfall in generation capacity.

The wire was removed from the Transmission line resulting in the Exxon Mobil Power Station to be reconnected back into the system.

All feeders were restored throughout the morning until 2.18pm when electricity supply was fully restored.

I take this opportunity to appeal to the general public not to vandalise PNG Power property because this will only inconvenience everyone.

PNG Power sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused.
